In June 1941, bell began work on the project, which received the designation XP-63. The first prototype took off from the airfield Buffalo 7 Dec 1942 and on 26 April 1943, completed tests of the third prototype. In October 1943, the first production aircraft left the Assembly shop. In the summer of 1944, the aircraft was given the name "Kingcobra". Of the 33,000 serial machines of the USSR received more than two-thirds of the R-63A-2397 machines. First of all, the R-63A entered the compounds previously flying on the R-39, but the R-63A did not manage to fight in the great Patriotic War. They took part in battles with Imperial Japan.
