In the 1970s, the Soviet Union launched a development program to replace the at-P series of artillery tractors (which were based on the VRU-57 onboard self-propelled gun) with a new generation of vehicles. The MT-L was designed to meet this requirement based on the amphibious chassis of the PT-76 light tank. MT-LB is the armoured variant of the MT-L. Production started in the early 1970-ies. It was built at the Kharkov tractor plant, under license in Poland and Bulgaria.
